When You Don’t Think You’re Good Enough For Your Significant Other And Everyone Else Seems To Agree

And it’s not like you’re a bad person or anything. In fact, maybe most of the time, you even like yourself, and think of yourself as a really good person. You may have friends and family who genuinely like being around you. And here’s this other person whom you love so incredibly much, and who loves you just as much, and it’s amazing and wonderful and then…

All you ever hear from people are how lucky you are to have this other person. How good of a boyfriend/girlfriend they must be. Maybe even how surprised they were when you two started dating.

And it starts to get to you. Only a little at first, probably because you were still riding the high of a brand-new, fulfilling relationship. But as time goes on and the relationship is still amazing, you’re still hearing those words. And you start to think… “Why does no one ever say he/she/them is lucky to have me?”

Your significant other may very well be this amazing human being who truly is just so different from the perceived, so-called “norm”, and that’s one of the things you love about them. But it starts to hurt that no one seems to think you’re good enough for them, especially if sometimes you doubt it yourself. Maybe a lot of the time, you might even know you are good enough for them.

But sometimes? It’d just be real nice for other people to say so, as well. For it not to seem like everyone else thinks your significant others deserves better than you, because that’s what’s implied when they say those things over and over again, even if they don’t necessarily mean it that way. Of course, maybe they do. Which hurts, too.

You know the love you share is bigger and stronger than all of this, certainly if you’ve been together a long time. But you also know you’re human. And as such, you do really like a little bit of validation and encouragement from the outside now and then. There’s nothing wrong with that.

So what do you do when you sometimes worry that you’re not good enough for this amazing person in your life, and so many of the people who comment on the relationship seem to, at least on some level, agree?

Well. Let me know if you figure it out.
