1. Make sure your clothes fit.
This sounds simple, but so often I see men and women wearing clothes that don’t fit. When buying a new piece of clothing, ask yourself questions like, “Is this the correct length for me?” or “Is it too big or too small?” You can easily subtract ten pounds by wearing clothes that fit well.
2. Dress for your body type.
As much as I love a classic shift dress, I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that they don’t look good on my body type. We all look different, so we all must dress differently. Self-awareness is key in so many facets of life, and dressing yourself is no different. If you aren’t sure what looks good on your build, you can Google it or ask a friend.
3. Step Up Your Game.
I love a t-shirt and shorts as much as the next person, but will they help you dress well? When the situation calls for it, put away your sweats and put on something a bit nicer. Another way to step up your game is to leave the jerseys and shirts featuring characters at home as well. I’m a fan of Hello Kitty and the Boston Red Sox, but wearing them on my chest isn’t exactly professional or especially flattering.
4. Quality over quantity.
I get it. Forever 21 has amazing clothes and the best prices; however, their clothes don’t really stand the test of time. Even if you don’t like fashion, do a bit of investing in a few classic pieces. Not only will they last longer, they’ll probably be more flattering because the fabric is better and more time was put into the garment. Also, if it’s got holes or it’s clearly past it’s prime, throw it away. Let go and move on.
5. If you don’t feel great in it, don’t wear it.
With so many clothing options out there, you can absolutely feel great in every outfit you own. You may not believe me, but it’s true. You’ve had those moments in the fitting room when you feel like you can do anything in the clothes. Buy those; wear those.
Being true to yourself is the most important thing. Whether you’re preppy with pearls or a glam goth goddess, you can dress well and feel great doing it.
